tendulkar's most famous run out

Eden Gardens, Calcutta, 1999 India vs Pakistan: Sachin Tendulkar hits Wasim Akram into mid-wicket and takes off for 3 runs. He runs the first two quite fast(as he always does) and then turns in for the third. The fieldsman retrieves the ball from the boundary and to everyone ’s surprise hits the stumps(look how the Pakistan team reacts)!! Shoaib Akthar who is already present behind the stumps(not quite behind though) to receive the throw jerks back and whoops!! He bangs right into Sachin who is trying to land his bat.

Steve Bucknor(yes it was him!) refers the decision to the third-umpire. Eden Gardens goes into a frenzy and unites to shout “IN..IN..IN” while the third umpire takes his time to take a final call. The replays are played and everyone is slowly realizing that Shoiab Akthar had deviated from his catching position behind the stumps and got into the way of the little master. The third umpire takes a decision and the scoreboard flashes “OUT”.

That’s it! The crowd erupts, goes into an anger mode(its Eden Gardens!!) as they feel the decision should have gone in the favour of Sachin as Shoaib obstructed him. But Sachin accepts the decision and walks away calmly in full dignity. The crowd has different ideas. They refuse to accept the decision and bring the match to a halt. They start throwing water bottles and paper missiles into the ground to show their dissent.

The situation slowly goes out of control and there is a danger that the match could be abandoned. Or even the police going into a “lathi charge” mode to manage the crowd. Suddenly, Sachin walks out into the ground with a couple of black commandos behind him. He reaches out to the crowd and persuades them to calm down. An incident of this magnitude was never witnessed in cricket before where a player was given out and the crowd unites to stop the proceedings. Not even the greatest of the greats can command this kind of emotion, love & affection from their fans. Sachin takes the situation in his hands and successfully controls the crowd and the match carries on.
